One Long Title Fight

On March 29, 1889 a boxing match was held in San Francisco, California for the welterweight Championship of the world. The two fighters were Paddy Duffy of the United States the reigning champion and Tom Meadows of Australia. If the fans were expecting a hard fought 15 round fight as fans today would expect; they got more then their monies worth as the fight went an incredible 45 rounds. The fight set a record for the longest title fight. In the 45th round Meadows was disqualified and the fight ended in Duffys favor. Less then a year and a half later Duffy died of tuberculosis at the age of 25 on July 10, 1890.
