A Big Bulls game

Today marks the anniversary of one of biggest games in the early history of the team. The game occurred well before the Michael Jordan era rolled into town. It was January 8, 1970 when the Phoenix Suns arrived at Chicago Stadium for a game wit the slumping Bulls. The Bulls who had won only 2 of their last 9 games, were going to give the fans quite a scoring show.
By halftime the Bulls had a set a club record with a 78-51. Had they scored one more point in the second quarter, they would have tied the club mark for most points in a quarter. By the time the dust setled the Bulls came away with a club record 152-123 win. They attempted 71 free throws in the game with 48 of them in one half. They had 4 players with 21 or more points in the game. Bob Boerwinkle of the Bulls had a club record 37 rebounds. The Bulls have had many more memoable games since.
Tomorrow we will look at another long time sports team and their beginnings.

Boxing Down Under

Boxing as a sport has enjoyed a very long history dating back to ancient times. Although gloves were frequently used by fighters there was a period in time when boxers went bareknuckle to fight their bouts. On January 7, 1814 at the Sydney Racetrack the first bareknuckle fight to be held in Australia took place the two fighters were Australian John Berringer and Englishman Charles Lifton. The fight went on for close to three hours. After 36 rounds Berringer was declared the winner.
This is the oldest event to be profiled in  my book "The Biggest This Date in Sports History Book yet". I have completed writing the book, all I need is a publisher. If you cant help me find a publisher, please click on the blogs advertisements, that is how I make money. Soon there after I can write a better blog and get a publisher and you get the chancce to read a really book.
Until then please keep reading my blog and tomorrow we will will look at an interesting basketball game played in Chicago. I am hoping to get the chance to write another Bonus Blog this weekend, any nominations as to topic?

A Look at the International Side

I have found that many of the readers of this blog are folks from other countries. I have no idea who you are, I would like to know who is reading my blog both here in the United States and aboard. I really want to know what my readers think. Today in the honor of my international readers, I am going to take a look at international sporting events that took place outside the USA.
I start on January 6, 1936 at Edgeley Park Stadium in Stockport in the greater Manchester area of the UK, the Home of the Stockport County FC. On this particular day they were visited by the Halifax Town club for a Third division North match. The home club scored an amazing league rcord of 13 goals to take a 13-0 victory on their way to a division title.
We travel back to Mexico for January 6, 1957 Mexican Pacific Coast League doubleheader at Cuidad Obregon. In the first game Dallas, Texas born Barney C. Serrell of the Los Mochis Club had 4 home runs and 7 RBIs to the visitors to a 9-8 win in 11 innings. Serrell however never got his chance to play professionally in the States leaving the game after 3 years in the Mexican League. In the nightcap the home club scored a 12-10 win in 13 innings.
We move on to 1959 where baseball play resumed in the Cuban League just six days after the Castro Revolution put things on hold and forever altered the History of the Cuban nation.
We travel forward to Harbin, China and January 6, 2003 when the Macau National Ice Hockey team made its international debut in a game against Hong Kong. The game was a disaster for the new club taking a 30-0 thrashing by the Hong Kong Club.
Tomorrow we take a very early look at boxing in Australia.

A Perfect Day in Mexico

Baseball has long been a favorite sport in Mexico. For many decades the country has hosted both Summer and Winter leagues for its professional players to play in. Its main winter league is called the Mexican Pacific League. The league has been playing since 1946. The league has used several names in its history, settling on its current name since the 1970-71 season. When it did take its current name it did not take long for excitement to kick in.
On January 5, 1971 the Guaymas Oystermen were visited by the team from Cuidad Obregon. The Obregon team sent Vicente Romo to the mound to pitch for them. Romo who had already spend 4 years playing in the Majors with the Dodgers, Indians and Red Sox responded by pitching a 12-0 perfect game before all of 71 fans. Romo was clearly the best pitcher in the league that season. After his perfect game he had a record of 12-5 with an ERA of 1.31, a full half run better then his closest competitor. He would only pitch four more seasons in the majors before a long run in the Mexican League before making one last, one season run with the Dodgers in 1982.
Tomorrow, we take a look at several remarkable events in international sports including a look at another feat in the league that Vicente Romo played in.

Some firsts, A one last

One constant across the sports world, especially on the minor league level is that leagues come and go and playing facilities come and go. As we look into the sports history of January 4, like any other day, we will find that to be true.
We start on January 4, 1883 when the Ontario Rugby Union was formed. You may not reconize the organization but, the league that came forth from this organization many years later. It was the Canadian Football League and its very humble beginnings.
Speaking of humble beginnings in the first daily blog last May, we wrote about the first league games being played by the baseball league that later became the International League in 1884. Today we mark the anniversary of the leagues founding.
Just one year later they witnessed what was supposed to be opening day for Baseballs' California League. The league scheduled one game to be played every Sunday as a part of its 52 game league schedule. The first three games of the season were rained out. No word if they scheduled makeup games later, before they season closed at the end of December.
We skip ahead to 1962 when the International Hockey League held its first All-Star Game. The Saint Paul Saints hosted the game at the Saint Paul Auditorium  and beat the All-Star team by a score of 6-5
On January 4, 1968 The North American Soccer League was formed by a merger between the National Professional Soccer League and the United Soccer Association.
Two years later the Kansas Chiefs won the last American Football League championship game when the beat the Oakland Raiders 17-7 at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.
On January 4, 1997 the Buffalo Bandits of the Major Indoor LaCrosse League held its first league game at the brand new Marine Midland Arena in Buffalo, New York, after four seasons at the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium.
Finally on January 4, 2001 the National  Basketball Development League named Fayetteville, North Carolina as its first league city. Although the team folde after the 2005-06 season the league marchs on strongly.
Tomorrow we go play baseball south of the border.

Another Look at Basketball

Today we are looking once again at the world of basketball. We begin today with January 3, 1900 when the Millville, Connecticut Glassblowers Club entered the National Basketball League in place of the Chester, Pennsylvania Club. The league which was in its second season, was serving as the first professional basketball league in the young sport. The Glassblowers were no pushover club as they tied the Trenton National with a 14-4-1 record for the leagues second half title. The Nationals had won the first half title. After losing the battle of an ineligble player, the Glassblowers lost the best two out three playoff series. They were however a vast improvement from the Chester Club that went 0-6 before disbanding.
We continue to the year 1928 when the American Basketball League was forced to make a few adjustments to its league lineup. The Detroit, Michigan club folded and the Washington, DC Club was transferred to Brooklyn, New York. The league was in the middle of its third season of play and was at the time was one of  two professional leagues functioning.
On January 3, 1967 the Philadelphia '76ers defeated the New York Knicks 148-142 in overtime at Madison Square Garden. In the month of January, the two clubs would meet three times in three places with the '76ers winning 2 of the 3 contests by a combined score of 371-365. The Philadelphia club would also take the season series by a count of 8 games to 1 in rout to a very strong 68-13 record and a league title. On the very same date in the NCAA Ohio defeated MacMurray by a commanding score of 122-70.
On January 3, 1978 at the Omni Coliseum in Atlanta, Georgia the Detroit Pistons beat the Atlanta Hawks by a score of 106-103, despite the fact that the Hawks had 22 of the games 39 steals as the two clubs must of thought they were a gang of thieves playing a game of keep away.
Finally on January 3, 2007 at the Fedex Forum in Memphis, Tennessee, the Memphis Grizzlies beat the Golden State Warriors by a score of 144-135. The Warriors were acting as if they could not cross the three point line as they scored 18 of games 30 three point goals.
Tomorrow we will look at some beginnings and a couple of endings in sports history.

A Hockey Beginning

On January 2, 1912 Frank and Lester Patrick's hockey league the Pacific Coast Hockey Association played its first game. The game was played at the brand new Patrick Arena in Victoria, British Columbia. The visiting New Westminster Royals won the game 8-3 over the Victoria Senators. It has been reported the entire league had only 23 players for its 3 team operation. The league quickly flowered and by the Spring of 1915 the league was playing in the Stanley Cup finals and on even par with the established National Hockey Association, the forerunner of the National Hockey League. Through most of its 13 season run the league only fielded 3 clubs. The end came after the 1923-24 season when the Seattle Club folded and the two surving clubs Vancouver and Victoria joined the Western Canada Hockey League.
Tomorrow we will check in with the world of Basketball. have agood week everyone!!
