A Hockey Beginning

On January 2, 1912 Frank and Lester Patrick's hockey league the Pacific Coast Hockey Association played its first game. The game was played at the brand new Patrick Arena in Victoria, British Columbia. The visiting New Westminster Royals won the game 8-3 over the Victoria Senators. It has been reported the entire league had only 23 players for its 3 team operation. The league quickly flowered and by the Spring of 1915 the league was playing in the Stanley Cup finals and on even par with the established National Hockey Association, the forerunner of the National Hockey League. Through most of its 13 season run the league only fielded 3 clubs. The end came after the 1923-24 season when the Seattle Club folded and the two surving clubs Vancouver and Victoria joined the Western Canada Hockey League.
