How Did That Happen?

Yesterday I promised a look at the Hartford Whalers, as a last bit of proofreading before publishing I discovered the events being profiled were a day early. Today I am switching to my old standby, baseball. We are going to look at a league called the Piedmont League. The league had started out in 1920 as a North Carolina based league. As time progressed the league slowly drifted North. By the time the league folded after the 1955 season it was Virginia based with a couple of teams in Pennsylvania. On March 4, 1931, the league expanded by two clubs when the Asheville and Charlotte, North Carolina clubs were admitted to give the league eight clubs.

Exactly six years to the day later, the league expanded by two again to again give it eight clubs. The league welcomed the Charlotte and Winston-Salem, North Carolina clubs into the league. Wait another minute!! Charlotte was admited into the league on two separate occasions exactly six years apart. The first club moved to Rocky Mount, North Carolina after the 1935 season and the league had lost two clubs in 1932. This time the Hornets stayed in the league until after the 1942 season. Today the Charlotte Knights are long standing members of the AAA International League.

The answer to yesterdays trivia question is the Baltimore Colts, who scored 27 points in a 70-27 loss to the Rams, who beat the Detriot Lions 65-24 the following weekend. The Colts-Rams game was played on October 22, 1950. Todays trivia question is how many goals have been scored by the United States Soccer team at the World Cup tourament in its history?
